Our local community college hosted a symposium a few years ago. It offered a few interesting classes, so I opted to attend. What I didn't realize was that it was really geared for educators from across my state. The keynote speaker might have been the same fellow you mention here, the message was quite similar.

What really shocked and saddened me was when he posed a question to an auditorium full of "educators". The audience ranged from high school teachers to community and traditional college faculty members and a handful of others like myself. The speaker asked the audience if learning was fun or work. He wasn't asking if it was work to teach - he was specifically asking about the act of learning. Of hundreds of people attending, there were less than 10 of us who excitedly raised our hands to indicate that learning was fun - most of us were not educators. The hundreds of teachers vehemently espoused that there was nothing fun about learning and it was not only work, but hard work to learn new things. Their comments after wards made it obvious that they missed the entire point and were going to steadfastly continue teaching without considering this so-called video game effect. Video games were toys after all and learning is serious business.

I guess for many of our educators, it long ago ceased to be about learning and is more about business. So sad. Hopefully, parents will find your post and learn more about Mr. Gee's ideas and implement them at home.
